Have you hear of the Gidget Foundation’s DVD release ‘Behind The Mask?”
This feature length documentary concerns perinatal anxiety and depression. And guess what? It’s the first of its kind in Australia.
Unbelievable!!
Anxiety and depression are so common around childbirth, both for men and for women, and yet there has not been a film available to explain the conditions and to comfort and reassure those who experience it.
I think I am as gobsmacked as when I realised that there wasn’t a book on PND available in shops. When our publisher asked Benison and I to write one, I laughed at her and said: ‘Don’t be daft, Jane, there must be loads.’ Wah-wah! Not true.
Anyway, the makers of this DVD have poured their hearts and souls into it and have produced a fantastic resource. Experts from Tresilian and Karitane and from many other groups let us know that they would find a use for it right away. Early childhood nurses will find it invaluable. It is already being shown to medical students- fantastic news.
Something I particularly loved is that it places anxiety and depression within the wider context of the many mixed emotions of motherhood and fatherhood.
Here’s a very beautiful 8 minute trailer of the DVD from Youtube:

This is such a great initiative – and I love the animation. I hope you don't mind, but I posted this vid over at my blog too.
