Self Care Saturday 4: The Australia Day Edition

First page of my first Aussie photo album

Mates, Aussies, Countrymen, put down your beers.

Lets us concentrate for a moment on thinking how the week has been and how we have taken care of ourselves.

Frankly, it’s been an up and down week here at Casa Catastrophe for myself, the four boisterous bairns and our long suffering au pair, Bethany.

There’s been lovely times, and horrible kid-bickering times.

And I’ve lost the rag, jumped up and down and foamed at the mouth a few times.

None of these parenting techniques work well.

And it’s exquisitely embarrassing to have non-family viewers of one’s furore.

Groan. Luckily I am very skilled at apologising. My experience shines though.

Have taken plenty exercise, have eaten better than last few weeks. Have NOT slept enough. That’s what I need to work on.

Australia Day will be meaningful for me. It’s just gone 25 years since I first flew into Sydney as a daft young scuba diver.

My mate Ian picked me up at the airport and we went to Cronulla for a surf that arvo.

Ian and I met on a beach at Sagres in western Portugal one drunken evening in 1983. We shared a few youthful misadventures over the years and he always told me I’d love Australia. So I came and I did.

My 24th birthday, me in stripes and blue flowery pants, Ian in blue t-shirt, we all seem to be having a jolly time.

And I particularly love the fact that Ian married one top girl, who’s more long suffering than Bethany.

Then they had kids who get on with mine, it’s heaven.

It’s so sad not to share family occasions with my own family. But I’m lucky to have these long friendships with hilarious Aussies.

They feel like family now.

Lucky, grateful… glad to have friends-like-family on Australia Day.

How are you travelling this week?

Can you do something sweet for yourself this long weekend?

 Take it easy,

Linking up joyfully to Amanda’s Australia Day Party over at A Cooker and a Looker.

See you there!

  1. Elisa {with grace & eve} says:

Enjoy your long weekend! I need to work on the getting more sleep part too x

  2. Great post Seana. You newer immigrants have more to compare oz to with than us older immigrants but I do appreciate this fabulous country and thank the powers that be every day that I was born in paradise. Talk about lucky. Heading to the beach today, where it’s free, completely egalitarian and beautiful. What more could you want?

  3. Love your floral pants – they would not be out of place in 2013! Happy Australia Day Seana. x

  4. Love the striped socks to match your striped top (which doesn’t quite match the floral pants). LOL. Oh those were the days …
    Happy Australia Day

  5. Check you out with the stripes and floral print!!! So glad Ian convinced you to come over.
And you scuba dive? We have to do that together one day too!
I’m hoping to get an hour long Thai massage this weekend. I’ve found the best place. I always walk out all wobbly and light headed.

  6. Love this post! Your shining smile is EXACTLY you! So very pleased you came here & made Aus home! All of us “are” immigrants here even though born here. Love to you this Aus Day & best wishes for the ocean swim xx

  7. We are very pleased you jumped on that plane and came. Enjoy it with you mate and I will try and work on getting more sleep too!

  8. Lovely. I love that gorgeous happy Photo.

  9. I love friends-like-family. We had our Aust Day celebrations last night with a quiz night with 12 others, it was hilarious. Australia Day is in Doha for us, we’re heading to the Qatar Open (Golf) and maybe a bbq for dinner. It is the middle of winter here so the weather is glorious, 27 degrees yesterday :-)

I need to be much better to myself, I keep telling myself it will start this week. I’ll report back and let you know how it goes. xx

  10. Happy Australia Day Seana!

  11. Old friends like your mate Ian are what life is all about, Seana. And what a cutie you were at 24. Still got it, baby. x

  12. Ha ha – I was also a fan of stripes until I realised I looked horridable in them. We had a wet Aussie Day but we were together and happy and healthy so that is all that matters right? Okay if I’m honest, which I am, I just wanted 2 hours without my 3 lil’ shits underfoot! Emily
