The Palmer Coolum Resort: Our Family Review in Photos

201305 Coolum -131-blog

Hello T Rex. More dinosaurs to follow we believe.

So we went on a proper family holiday last school hols… it seems so long ago now… Here’s a visual guide to the Palmer Coolum Resort on the Sunshine Coast. Lots of good bits but some criticism too.

We went there for the golf course (no, not for me) really and chose this resort because of years of good word of mouth from friends. If you look on Tripadvisor, you’ll find lots of people with complains as well as praise. As you’ll find here too. Read on!

I’ve already posted a detailed report on the kids clubs and kids activities.

Come on, let’s go for a visual tour.

We stayed in a gargantuan three bedroom house. there are also two bedroom suites and single rooms too.

We had our own wee pool.

Here’s why we came here, the golf course… much appreciated by hubby and the teens who are keen beginner golfers.

There are many pools dotted around this huge resort. This one was beside the Ambassador Club very close to the house.

It did look very tranquil when the twins weren’t in it.

I liked these old-fashioned wicker recliners.

Sadly the central resort pool is in need of a major makeover.

When you’re paying basically an arm and a leg to stay somewhere, lots of mess around the pool is not on.

SONY DSC

I’m not saying we didn’t have fun there… just that it looks scruffy.

As does the children’s play area: very dowdy.

Wading pool in desperate need of sprucing up.

There are plenty of eating options.

Children are well catered for.

Especially if they like pizza.

Sorry to have so few photos of the very lovely Spa… but I was too busy having facials, massages etc etc We had booked a Golf and Spa package, so each adult had one token each day which could be used at the Spa or to play golf. It’s a hard life.

There’s a good stretch of beach at the resort, you can get there in a little buggy or by bike. Ms7 was NOT happy when I took her down as the wind was blowing hard.

She was happy when she was cycling around the resort.

The six of us had 9 bags to check in… lots of sports stuff with us and the ever-present guitar.

Big tick.  The staff at the resort were really, really terrific, helpful, patient and kind to the kids. Big tick.

Big minus…. I was infuriated to have to pay a 1.5% fee to pay by credit card. Next time I need to take copious piles of cash instead. Really these fees are not on!

Read my detailed report on the kids clubs and kids activities here.

Does that give you a flavour of this resort?

It did work well for our rather tricky family for six.

But it’s a major investment!

Can you recommend another good Aussie resort with lots of sports for us for next time?

 Happy Travelling.

I love Coolum but the \”resort\” was looking scruffy! :0The frog jelly was awesome though :)I liked Paradise Resort, see the link on gourmetgetaways paradise-resort-gold-coast The rooms are a little on the three star rating side.. but the facilities are awesome, its right in the Gold Coast, some Kids Club sessions are free and the kids love it!! …and I love being able to do adult things a the Gold Coast with happy kids……oh and it is still cheap as the rooms are being renovated.

Thanks, I would like to get to the Gold Coast again with the boisterous bairns. We’ve done it once, staying at the Seaworld Resort but it was a bit far from everything else and my teens like to be independent. I’d like to be more on the Goldie next time. Thanks XX

It is disappointing when you pay a shedload on credit card and then get hit with fees. Feels like a rip off.

It looks nice and the food looks terrific.

Thank you, yes those credit card fees are a pain in the ass… they feel more expensive than they are…

  • I haven’t been since it got changed from the Hyatt but i have heard other bad reports. I am very jealous about that spa ticket though. When I went the spa was brilliant – I’m sure you made the most of it :)

I think I need to go back to the Spa just to double check it is as good as I thought it was. Seriously should have taken more photos. I love the women only and men only sections, loved the pool and the steam room.

Looks like a nice place but they really need to clean up around this pool… I hate those fees on the credit card.

I hate the credit card fees at hotels. If you are paying $6k or whatever, it’s HUGE. They’d be better sneaking it in to the cost of the room and saying that they aren’t charging it. What are you meant to pay with? They won’t take cheques and you can’t walk round with a suitcase of cash…

Quite! I thought I could use Eftpos but my card has a low limit. Was fuming.

We live near here and went out there recently to see Jeff the dinosaur and we did think it looked all around like it needed some TLC.
    Great review!

The 3 bedroom house with own pool looks like my kind of place to stay.
Pity the place is in QLD or I would send my man (the best pool builder and renovator in Sydney) to do the job – oh well, next time :)

They need him, put in a call. The house we stayed in really was vast which suited us very well.

    Hotly Spiced

I have stayed at this resort but a long time ago when it was new and fresh. It seems like it’s still an okay place to go however if it’s looking tired and dated perhaps they need to bring the prices down to reflect its current state. I think charging penalties for using credit cards is an outrageous grab for cash however it seems everywhere you go there businesses are charging these fees so what do you do! xx

Next time I go somewhere like this I will check and if they charge I shall go and get cash out of the bank!! Or rob a bank… that might be the best option.

It looks like you had a great time.

But I must admit I am with you, if you pay a small fortune you expect the best and it to be maintained.

I suppose the only for these places to improve is for some else to open nearby with better maintained facilities and the people to stop coming for them to take action.

  • Looks like it had some plusses and minuses. Thanks for the honest feedback as we will be planning a holiday over that way and would like to stay somewhere like this. I do like the golf course though :)

Always best to be honest… my husband and son played on the gold course each day and sometimes my other boys did too. They absolutely LOVED their golf… and all the kids and even I enjoyed some tennis too, and swimming. It is a good spot, I just wished I had a broom with me occasionally so I could get it looking more shipshape.

My son would love the dinosaur and the dessert, yay for you having a spa treatment – and that packing is pretty good for 6 I reckon! Great review as always and honest which is ever better! Em x

Ah, it’s a warts and all life isn’t it? I can’t praise highly enough the lovely staff there, especially the ladies at the various kids clubs. Love a bit of peace and quiet on holidays… it actually felt like a holiday at some times – astounding!!
